So this might not be a good path do go down, depending on the store and other workers might have better advice than me. Some booksellers will brush you off, because we do get a lot of folks coming into the store asking about hiring and usually we say to apply online, you’ll be contacted or not. I’m just outlining one of the best case scenarios. but that’s only if they seem able to talk. Think of a couple basic things you’d like to know. Could you also help me locate X as well?” Takes some tension off if you’re there looking for something else that way you both have an easy out if they need to go do other things haha. Honestly, just a “hi! I’m sending in an application and wanted to say hello and maybe ask some questions. Be sure to give your name if you do so (the number of people who have called to ask about the status and not introduced themselves by name so that we can note it down makes me sad). Do not do this on a busy day or expect to have a long talk. Maybe maybe maybe go into the store and inquire about what jobs are available and introduce yourself to make a first impression. Please remember that it can also take a while for them to get back to you. If you’re seen as pestering by calling multiple times to ask, and/or showing up to ask in person that’s not going to look great.

I’ve had many people call or show up to ask about the status of their applications, which while fine, usually gets the same answer of “we’re still in the hiring process, we’ll contact you if we choose to proceed” or “sorry we’re not hiring at this time” (if we’ve chosen a person). Don’t try to force an in-person talk/interview. That’s the only way they can process an application. Apply online through their job search site.
